Quiet to the contraly. Nabongo Mumia, was a luhya King to one of the largest/strongest most infuential Pre colonial dynasties in present day western Kenya. I want to believe that the Luhyas were once self sufficient and pround people who were able to fend for themslves through tending of the land and herding cattle, sheep and goats. However they might have been too trusting of others and since they believed people could just farm anywhere, they did not assign themselves land as other tribes did. Any one from Mumias to clarify for us the Nabongo Mumia story?.

Nabongo Mumia is recognized and remembered in two different counteracting ways. Some people criticize his chiefdom and leadership basing on the historic facts that he gave in rather easily to the Colonial British for their own advantage. These critics believe that despite his bold character and qualities as a "strong" paramount chief, he was used in certain ways by the British to benefit their colony.
Some of us identify him as strategic, organized and successful administrator of the early Luhya stronghold during the pre-colonial era, through colonization until his death in 1948. For some Luhyas he set an administrative structure to be emulated in the years ahead.
This is just a personal opinion. Even in our primary school history, the name Nabongo Mumia was almost "identical" to "Fierce Leader/chief"
